Lost Weekend

ATLANTA - The Mets dropped the final two games of the three-game series in Atlanta but could take solace in a much-needed Memorial Day off...and an added bonus.

Justin Wilson gave up five runs on three hits, two walks and two hit batsmen while failing to record an out in a forgettable eight inning that doomed the Mets to an 8-1 loss on Saturday.

The offense was a no show in both losses, including managing just four hits off Cole Hamels, who threw eight airtight innings to earn a 3-1 victory for the Braves. Marcus Stroman was the tough-luck loser, giving up six hits and all three runs in 6 1/3 innings.

The Mets' only two runs in the last 18 innings were solo homers by Jake Marisnick on Saturday and Wilson Ramos on Sunday.

At a time when the Mets are in desperate need of rest, they caught a break Tuesday night as their matchup with the Phillies at Citizen Bank Park was washed out by rain. The teams will play a day/night doubleheader on Wednesday.

In the meantime, the Braves have closed the gap to 3 1/2 games on the front-running Mets in the NL East. The Mets still lay claim to the best record in the Senior Circuit at 33-20.
