Davis Saves The Day


FLUSHING - J.D. Davis possesses a sense for the dramatic. Maybe, it can be traced to a poise to perform when the pressure is highest.


Poll Mets' fans and, chance are, the reason he is so embraced eminates from a gamer's grit and subtle swagger in the clutch. He the Flushing faithful needed anymore reason to back Davis, he obliged with a timely blast.


Neutralized by Sonny Gray for seven innings, New York tagged him for two runs in the bottom of the eighth, courtesy of Davis delivering a mighty blow. His two-run homer erased a one-run deficit and pushed the Mets past Cincinnati, 3-2, for their fourth successive victory.


Brandon Nimmo, a late-game replacement for Jeff McNeil who aggravated a hamstring pulling into second on a double in the sixth, singled with one out in the eighth. Davis ensued with a 448-foot, two-run shot to right that wiped out a 3-2 deficit.



Noah Syndergaard went the first seven, scattering five hits, fanning four and conceding a run in the fourth. Michael Conforto got the Mets even with an RBI single in the sixth but Seth Lugo gave the lead back to the Reds in the top of the eighth.


Edwin Diaz worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his ninth save.


The win wrapped up a 5-1 homestand and put wind in the sails as the Mets head to St. Louis for a showdown between division leaders. New York is 4 1/2 games clear of Washington with the Cardinals are 1 1/2 games up on the Cubs in the NL Central.
